Funeral for fallen Phoenix police Officer Zane Coolidge: What to know

A private funeral for Phoenix police Officer Zane Coolidge will take place on Wednesday, officials announced Friday.

The service, which is closed to the public, will be held at 10 a.m. at Dream City Church in north Phoenix. The public can view the funeral through the Phoenix Police

However, the public can still pay their respects to Coolidge, officials said. The family and Phoenix Police Department invited the community to line the sidewalks of the procession route, starting at 60th Street and Bell Road and continuing along the path to the church on Cave Creek Road.

Community members can also support the family by donating to a Phoenix Police Foundation fundraiser online. The police said all donations will go to the family.

“We will do everything we can to help them through their darkest hours, and we pledge that they will always be a part of the Phoenix Police Family,” Interim Phoenix police Chief Michael Sullivan wrote in a statement on Sept. 6.

Coolidge, a five-year veteran of the police force, died on Sept. 6 from injuries sustained during a call for an attempted car break-in. Once there, the suspect first fled on foot and then opened fire, wounding Coolidge and Officer Matthew Haney, officials said.

Coolidge, 29, remained in critical condition until he died at the hospital three days later. Haney, who worked in the same squad and precinct as Coolidge, was protected by a ballistic vest and released from the hospital on Sept. 4.

Saul Bal was arrested on suspicion of the shooting after an hours-long manhunt. He was being charged with first-degree murder, along with one count of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault, burglary and being a prohibited possessor.
